Be Bear Aware - Wildlife Safety Workshop

Whether you're hitting the trail, camping under the stars, or just living in bear country, this Be Bear Aware workshop is a must. We’ve teamed up with Bear Aware of Montana to bring you a fun, interactive event focused on staying safe in bear country—because being prepared is the best kind of confidence in the wild. 🧭 What You’ll Learn: How to avoid bear encounters while hiking, camping, and recreating The key differences between black bears and grizzlies (hint: it’s more than just color!) Tips for staying safe in picnic areas and residential neighborhoods near bear habitat Hands-on demo (if conditions allow) on how to properly carry and use bear spray This is a great event for families, hikers, campers, and anyone new to outdoor adventure in Montana. Bring your questions, your curiosity, and maybe a friend or two.

6:00 PM – Welcome & Check-In
Grab a seat, say hello to your neighbors, and pick up any handouts or bear safety materials.

6:10 PM – Introduction to Bear Country
Meet our guest educator from Bear Aware of Montana. We’ll kick off with a quick overview of Montana’s bear populations, habitats, and the importance of coexistence.

6:20 PM – Know the Bears
Learn the key physical and behavioral differences between black bears and grizzly bears—and why it matters for your safety.

6:35 PM – Safety in the Wild & at Home
We’ll dive into practical tips for staying safe while hiking, camping, or living in areas where bears might be nearby. Topics include:

  • Proper food storage
  • Setting up camp in bear country
  • Bear-safe behavior at picnic areas and in neighborhoods

6:55 PM – Bear Spray Demonstration (weather and space permitting)
See how to properly carry and deploy bear spray in a real-time demo.

7:15 PM – Q&A + Community Conversation
Ask your bear questions, share stories, or just stick around to connect with other nature-lovers and learn more about upcoming “Explore Local” events.

7:30 PM – Event Wrap-Up

Glen Lake North Pavilion

Glen Lake Rotary Park (formerly East Gallatin Recreation Area) is a beloved 83-acre outdoor destination. Just minutes from downtown, this park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and recreational amenities, making it a favorite spot for both locals and visitors.
What to Bring
For the Be Bear Aware workshop, participants don’t need to bring much.
  • Notebook & pen – For jotting down tips, bear facts, or questions.
  • Refillable water bottle – Stay hydrated, especially if we’re outside.
  • Camp chair or blanket – If seating is outdoors or limited, it’s nice to have your own!
  • Layers & comfortable shoes – Montana evenings can cool off quick. Be ready for changing temps.
  • Sunscreen or bug spray – Just in case!
  • Curiosity & questions – This is a great chance to learn from wildlife educators.
